What is an Evaporator Coil and what is its main function?
During a hot and muggy Atlanta summer, you want heat energy moved out of your home. During cooler winter days, heat energy is moved back in. This is the main operation of an evaporator coil.
Moving heat energy out of your home on a hot Atlanta summer day is done with refrigerant. Your air conditioner compresses refrigerant with chills it by dissipating heat energy into the outside air. The chilled refrigerant is pumped inside to the indoor coil, and warm air from the home is moved through the coil. The refrigerant absorbs heat energy, and is moved back out to the air conditioner to repeat the process.
Where is the Evaporator Coil located?
When you have a furnace for heating*, the indoor coil is kept in a box and mounted on top of the furnace, and it’s called an evaporator coil. Your evaporator coil is not only essential for air conditioning to work, but a clean coil protects efficiency. The coil interior is dark and damp due to water condensation, and mold is all too happy to grow in this environment. A UV lamp mounted inside the coil protects efficiency by killing the mold.
*If you heat with a heat pump instead of a furnace, the indoor coil is housed in an air handler.
